NOTES: Served in the Civil War, Co. K. 38th Reg., Ohio Vol. Inf. Enlisted 1 SEP 1861; discharged 22 APR 1863. Went west soon after the Civil War. It is told that in his wanderings in the west he went to a house and knocked. When the door was opened he was surprised to see his Mother come to the door. James became a prospector in Arizona with a partner. Failing to come in for supplies the storekeeper went out to their cabin, found the body of one man outside of the cabin, the other inside of the door. It is reported that Indians killed James and his partner.
